David Grisman is one of the world’s best bluegrass mandolin players. He has performed with many people but this song is taken from his Quintet’s work. Slade is a song they wrote for Charles Sawtelle who was a long time friend and great bluegrass guitarist who passed away in 1999.
Ray Barretto was a Grammy winning Puerto Rican percussionist who played with many of the greats. His talent was sought after by Charlie Parker, Tito Puente, The Rolling Stones, and many more great acts. “Hijo de Obatala” translates as “Son of Obatala”. In the Yoruba religious system, Obatala is responsible for creating human bodies.
@playing4change This amazing project was put together by Mark Johnson who wants to bring world peace through music. It is a truly amazing musical production and idea. They have a bunch more great videos on their website. I spend hours at a time reading about the musicians and watching videos. Enjoy!
The passing of Michael Jackson yesterday was very sad and unexpected. I spent all night listening to Michael Jackson songs (it’s 4:30 am as I write this post to be published in the morning). There are tons of great Michael Jackson/Jackson 5 songs. I think the best way to pay respects is not to post an obscure Michael Jackson tune, but my favorite one. “I Want You Back” is without a question my favorite Michael Jackson tune. I created a new category for this post – Dedication. I did this because I don’t think this song is necessarily forgotten, unknown, or underplayed. Let me know what you think.

This song was originally written by The Knife but I like this version better. Shout out to Laini for recommending this one. Don’t forget to email dailysongfix : gmail : com with your song requests!
Jaco Pastorius was one of the best bass players to ever live. He died in 1987 in, for lack of a better term, a bar fight. He played with many famous people including the influential Jazz fusion group Weather Report. This song is one of his more funky numbers.
Here’s an Indie Rock band that did pretty well in the U.K. until they parted ways about a year ago. “Roll Out The Barrel” is a really upbeat and fun tune. It’s also pretty funny if you pay attention to the lyrics. Enjoy!
