Elikeh – Selma To Soweto

Posted in Underplayed Music, Unknown Songs on August 18th, 2009 by The Music Man – Be the first to comment

Elikeh is a collective of like-minded roots musicians performing their own brand of African Roots music. The material is a combination of traditional rhythms from Togo and 70’s Afrofunk. They seem to be heavily influenced by the music of Fela Kuti which makes sense because Elikeh’s drummer toured with Femi Kuti, Fela’s son, for three years.

On Saturday, August 22nd, Elikeh will be hosting an Afrofunk Dance Party in DC. If you are in the Baltimore/DC/NOVA area, this show is pretty much mandatory. While “Selma To Soweto” seems like a relatively chill song, Afrobeat music is always very fun to see live and everyone will be dancing their asses off. If you come out to the show, be sure to say hello. Show details below.

This Spoon song was featured in the film Colverfield and performed live by Spoon on Saturday Night Live on October 6, 2007. I haven’t heard it in a while but a friend told me to check it out again today and I realized it would be a great song for YDSF. Enjoy!

M. Ward – Chinese Translation

Matthew Ward is a singer-songwriter from Portland, Oregon. His music is mostly mellow with folk and country influences. “Chinese Translation” is the sixth song off his 2006 album, Post-War. The album has some cool songs if you are into the mellow folk sound. Besides great songs, great appearances are made by Jim James, Neko Case, and Mike Mogis.

Badly Drawn Boy – Silent Sigh

I guess this one is more “your daily artist fix.” I say this because I haven’t come across a Badly Drawn Boy song I absolutely love but they are all pretty damn good and it’s really good music to listen to. So far I have checked out the albums About A Boy, One Plus One Is One, and The Hour of Bewilderbeast with About A Boy being my favorite.

Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers – A La Mode

Art Blakey was one of the best Jazz drummers and band leaders of all time. He is known as one of the inventors of modern Bebop style drumming. Blakey started off playing piano and was playing professionally by his teens. Shortly after he dedicated himself to drums and was playing with Miles Davis, Dexter Gordon, Fats Navarro, and other greats by the mid 1940’s.

The Outlaw Gang is a funk group I haven’t been able to get much information on. If you have never heard of them, this funky two-minute tune is definitely worth your time. If you know about the band, drop us a comment so we can share the info.
