Simian – La Breeze

Formed in Manchester in 2000, Simian enjoyed a brief period of success with this song due largely to its appearance in numerous 2003 TV commercials.  The band broke up in 2005, but members still continue to make music.  The song is solid and I never understood why the band wasn’t more popular.

Earth, Wind & Fire – Sing a Song

Earth, Wind & Fire“When you feel down and out, sing a song!”  It’s hard to not do just that listening to this up-beat, happy-go-lucky funk melody.  Earth, Wind & Fire is the ultimate funk-pop band.  Their hit “Sing a Song” reached #5 on the U.S. Billboard Charts in 1976 and it’s regarded as one of the band’s most popular songs.  Founded in 1969 by Maurice White, EWF has sold over 90 million albums and enjoy continued success, performing songs to this day.

Harlem – Tila and I

Harlem are a trio from Austin, Texas by way of Nuggets. Their album Hippies dropped on April 6th of this very year. The fast-paced garage rock of “Tila and I” tells a different story than the disaffected lyrics. Check ‘em out on their current U.S. tour.

Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels – Jenny Take A Ride

Falling Somewhere in the Venn Diagram intersection of soul, doo-wop and motown music, the group of white boyz known as Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels definitely sounds more enthusiastic than they look playing “Jenny Take a Ride” in this Swingin’ Time clip. But the groove is rock solid, the chorus feel-good, and the organs help accent the classic “wall of sound” approach. Plus you get to hear Ryder before his solo career, which extends all the way to 2009.

Speaking of recent times, the prolific Ryder sounds pretty peeved he’s not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (Ryder: “There’s six members on the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame board of directors and three of those men are my enemies. So what are my chances of getting in there?”). How bout some Rust Belt love for Ryder, Cleveland?

Elvis – How Great Thou Art

Many people have an intimate knowledge of Elvis’ more popular songs. But not everyone has that same knowledge of his gospel music. In fact, Elvis was influenced by gospel from a very young age. Story has it that at two years old, he would frequently even try to run up on stage with the church choir to perform.

This hymn, originally written by Swedish poet Carl Gustav Boberg, was arranged by Presley and is the title track of Elvis’ second gospel album “How Great Thou Art.” This song won a Grammy in 1967 for Best Sacred Performance.

I recently traveled to Nashville and actually had the privilege of touring and recording in studio B at RCA studios, which is where this song was recorded. The highlight of the tour was when the producer there turned the lights down and played this song over the original speakers.

Andrew Bird – Satisfied

The first thing you have to say about Andrew Bird is that he’s pretty much good at everything.  If you have problems with your woman, he can fix them.  Need your taxes done? He’s a certified CPA.

He can also do his best Odetta impression and convince you it’s coming from a genuine place.  This is my favorite tune off of 2001’s The Swimming Hour.  You can’t learn soul.

"This is the soul tree. It gives me soul."
