Little Feat was formed in 1969 by Lowell George and Bill Payne. Their music contains elements of rock and roll, blues, folk, R&B, funk and jazz fusion. Waiting for Columbus, their 1978 album, is considered by many rock music critics to be one of the best live albums of all time. “Skin It Back” is off their album Feats Don’t Fail Me Now.

Jimi Hendrix – Bright Lights Big City

Originally written by Jimmy Reed, this version was taken from a live recording at St. George’s Club in Hackensack, New Jersey. The recording is from 1965 which was before Hendrix was famous. At this point he had really just been a side man for The Isley Brothers, Sam Cooke, Little Richard, and others. It sounds like Curtis Knight is singing on this version of Bright Lights Big City which was released on the album Drivin’ South.

Robert Cray is a great Blues musician and five-time Grammy award winner. Here is one of his more main stream sounding tunes but you can definitely hear the Blues influence.

Gil Scott-Heron – Save The Children

Gil Scott Heron is best known as a Spoken Word Soul performer and African American activist. His unique style of music from the 1960’s and 1970’s influenced Neo Soul music and a generation of Hip-Hop artists. Although this is a less known track than his famous “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised”, Scott-Heron mentioned in a recent interview that it is just as important. “Save The Children” is from the album Pieces of Man. I strongly recommend exposing yourself to that album.

Harry Manx – Don’t Forget to Miss Me

Harry Manx is definitely one of those guys that most people don’t know about. He is an extremely talented folk musician from the Isle of Man. You can hear eastern influences in a lot of his music but not so much in this song. Enjoy!

Taj Mahal – Queen Bee

Taj Mahal is one of my favorite musicians and song writers. I was lucky enough to get back stage passes to his show at the Fillmore in San Francisco a few months ago where I heard him perform Queen Bee live.
