Caetano Veloso is a composer, singer, guitarist, writer, and political activist. He is sometimes considered to be the Bob Dylan of Brazil.
If I haven’t said it already, I’ll say it now – Getz/Gilberto is one of my favorite albums of all time and I will probably post every song on the album at some point. “Pra Machucar Meu Coração” is my favorite song on the album but I am a little biased because I translated it and learned it on guitar a couple years ago before I traveled to Brazil. Let me know what you think!
We have been posting a lot of Brazilian music lately but everyone is loving it so why stop? I originally heard this song on a Brazilian music compilation album put out by David Byrne as his “musical love letter to Brazil.” Actually, that compilation, Beleza Tropical Brazil Classics 1, is without question one of my top ten favorite albums. “Umbabarauma” is the first song on that compilation.
CéU is a Brazilian musician from São Paulo whose music is influenced by a diverse set of genres including samba, valsa, choro, soul, rhythm and blues, hip hop, afrobeat and electrojazz music. This particular song is a samba off of her album Vagarosa. The entire album is very diverse so even if you don’t love this samba, you’ll probably find something you really like on the album.
Here is a great Brazilian Jazz song by one of Brazil’s finest – Joao Gilberto. I am going to be posting some more Joao Gilberto in the future and I will talk more about him then. For now, enjoy the music.
