Your Daily Song Fix

Resembling characters from a Tom Sawyer book, Brooklyn-based Spirit Family Reunion has created a West Virginian-emo-esque folk song.  “Cold, so Cold” sounds like it’s from back-country middle America, but the band is from Brooklyn, so they’ve hit the image and sound spot-on.  This song could easily find it’s way onto the soundtrack of a rough-around-the-edges horror film.

Mumford & Sons are an English folk rock band from London. Their debut album, Sigh No More, was released on October 5th, 2009. In 2010 they released “The Cave” which hit 70 on the

UK singles charts and 33 on the Australian music sales charts.
The band has a really nice indie folk sound without disregard for pop elements. While I would consider their music chill and melodic, there are times when it sounds very full and powerful. Thanks to Emmanuel for the song recommendation. Enjoy!

Sorry Daily Song Fix has been missing in action this week. I develop websites, blogs, and web applications for a living and these past couple weeks have been really busy. Taylor, a Daily Song Fix reader, sent me a great suggestion – Honey Dove by Lee Fields. I had not heard of Lee Fields before Taylor mentioned him but according to Taylor, “Honey Dove” is a “great soulful song by the classic funk artist Lee Fields. Currently performing with The Expressions on the Truth and Soul label and putting out solid funk and soul!” I definitely agree that this is some solid funk and soul. I will be paying more attention to Lee Fields in the future. Thanks Taylor!

Soulive is a really funky upbeat band and I will be posting lots of their music on this blog. This song is a bit soft and jazzy but very tasteful. Soulive teams up with Dave Matthews to cover the Ani Difranco song “Joyful Girl.” Eric Krasno takes a really awesome solo midway through the song to show some of that Soulive instrumental virtuosity. Caetano Veloso is a composer, singer, guitarist, writer, and political activist. He is sometimes considered to be the Bob Dylan of Brazil.

If I haven’t said it already, I’ll say it now – Getz/Gilberto is one of my favorite albums of all time and I will probably post every song on the album at some point. “Pra Machucar Meu Coração” is my favorite song on the album but I am a little biased because I translated it and learned it on guitar a couple years ago before I traveled to Brazil. Let me know what you think!

Here’s a cheesy one but I like the melody. For all you aspiring pop song writers out there…this one is pretty cool to analyze harmonically.

Kings of Leon are pretty popular with their hit “Sex on Fire” which is a damn good song. Not sure how many people have heard this one. Let me know what you think!
