The Outlaw Gang is a funk group I haven’t been able to get much information on. If you have never heard of them, this funky two-minute tune is definitely worth your time. If you know about the band, drop us a comment so we can share the info.
Chuck Brown is the Godfather Go-Go music which is a subgenre of funk music created in the 1970’s around the Washington D.C. area. He still gigs around the D.C. area and puts on great shows if you ever go around there. If you like “Block Party” you should also check out his cover of Love Theme From “The Godfather”.
( @ThailandQA ) Here is an awesome song off of Grant Green’s album Blue Breakbeats. It’s really upbeat and funky jazz.
Eddie Hazel was most famous for his incredible lead guitar playing in Parliament Funkadelic. In 1977, Hazel recorded Guitars, Dames, and Guitar Thangs with support from members of Parliament Funkadelic. “What About It?” is a great song off the album. While it doesn’t feature him ripping crazy solos, it has a really cool groove. Check out Maggot Brain if you want to see some ripping guitar solos.
@rebirthBB Rebirth Brass Band is a New Orleans brass band founded in 1982. I got a chance to see these guys in their home town last week at Maple Leaf Bar which is a great place to see bands in New Orleans. They are also coming around to The State Theatre in Virginia on August 13 and my band has the opening spot. Come by if you want to hear some old school funk music followed by some great original New Orleans style brass music.
There are a lot of great versions of “The Chicken” out there. This one has one the coolest bass solos I have ever seen performed by Tom Kennedy. Dave Weckyl, the drummer, is showing how the masters really listen to solos and adapt their playing to complement the soloist.
“Will It Go Round In Circles” was a number one hit in 1973 but I heard it for the first time last night at The Blues Club in New Orleans. Written by Billy Preston and Bruce Fisher, the song seems to get covered quite a bit. A quick search showed that Phish, String Cheese Incident, and Dave Matthews Band has covered the hit.
