Amy Winehouse – Best Friends

Posted in Underplayed Music, Unknown Songs on January 26th, 2010 by The Music Man – Be the first to comment

This song is about a relationship between two best friends. Stephanie and Paulette are references to characters in Grease 2. From what I have read, everyone fights over Stephanie whereas Paulette tries hard and craves approval from the other characters. I guess that says something about the friendship described in this song…

I don’t know how many of my readers are either musicians or really appreciate great musicianship. If you fall into either of those categories you definitely want to check out this version of Caravan as well as anything else from Brian Bromberg. The bass playing is simply amazing. Enjoy!

Here’s a cool tune with Chick Corea on Piano and Jean-Luc Ponty on Violin. I think Stanley Clarke is on bass for this one.

Ron Carter – Saguaro

Ron Carter is an incredible Jazz bassist. I have been wanting to own his album Piccolo for a long time but these days I mainly purchase records so the selection is somewhat limited and the purchases are relatively sporadic. I finally grabbed Piccolo from the Amazon mp3 store last week and just as I remembered, the album is amazing. “Saguaro” is my favorite tune off the album. Set aside 18 minutes of your time, lie in bed with the lights off, and enjoy the one of the best Jazz recordings available.

Art Blakey was one of the best Jazz drummers and band leaders of all time. He is known as one of the inventors of modern Bebop style drumming. Blakey started off playing piano and was playing professionally by his teens. Shortly after he dedicated himself to drums and was playing with Miles Davis, Dexter Gordon, Fats Navarro, and other greats by the mid 1940’s.

Chuck Brown is the Godfather Go-Go music which is a subgenre of funk music created in the 1970’s around the Washington D.C. area. He still gigs around the D.C. area and puts on great shows if you ever go around there. If you like “Block Party” you should also check out his cover of Love Theme From “The Godfather”.
