I previously posted “Sleepyhead” by Passion Pit and have another great one to share. “Little Secrets” is another great song off their album, Manners, released on 2009.

The New Pornographers – The Laws Have Changed

The New Pornographers are a Canadian/American indie rock group. The band has 8 members and their music is often described as power pop. Carl Newman writes most of the band’s music and shares vocal duties with Dan Bejar and the well-known Neko Case. “The Laws Have Changed” is off their second album, Electric Version. I really like the entire album and would also recommend checking out their first album, Mass Romantic, if you like this style of music.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – If You Want Me To Stay

Here is some early punk funk from my man Taylor. This cover of Sly and the Family Stone’s “If You Want Me To Stay” is from the album Freaky Styley, one of two albums with the true RHCP lineup before Hillel Slovak died of a drug overdose in 1988 (the other is The Uplift Mofo Party Plan). Freaky Styley was produced by George Clinton, principal architect of P-Funk, and features great jazz musicians Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker on horns. Flea (the bass player from RHCP) touted his jazz musician skills which most people probably never recognize by playing trumpet on this album.

Otis Redding – Try A Little Tenderness

“Try a Little Tenderness” is a love song written by “Irving King” and Harry M. Woods, and recorded initially on December 8, 1932 by the Ray Noble Orchestra (with vocals by Val Rosing). Otis Redding’s live version from the amazing album Live in London & Paris starts off with a great soulful melody and then transitions into an upbeat groove backed by a fearless horn section. I put this entire album in the Daily Song Fix Store (see the tab – Listen and Shop!) because it really is an amazing album. Props to Joe @ Chowabunga for the song suggestion.
Update: The Live in Paris version stopped working so I embedded a different one below, still great!

Talib Kweli – Move Somethin

This song was created by Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek, the duo who signed to upstart underground hip hop label Rawkus Records in 1997. A lot of highly acclaimed music came out of Rawkus Records including the album Black Star by Mos Def & Talib Kweli, and the awesome hip hop compilations – Soundbombing, Soundbombing II, and Soundbombing III.

David Byrne & Brian Eno – Strange Overtones

Everything That Happens Will Happen Today, released on August 18,2008, was a collaboration between two amazing artists – David Byrne and Brian Eno. Leo Abrahams helped produce the album and also co-wrote “Strange Overtones.” This electronic gospel album was born after a dinner conversation where Brian Eno told David Byrne that he had accumulated a lot of music that he had never formed into songs.

Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad – Missing You More

Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad ( @giantpandadub ) play an eclectic blend of roots reggae, dub, and afrobeat. Back in May I posted “Seasons Change” and I have to bring another one of their songs to my audience. I hope you enjoy “Missing You More”, an unknown song to most of the world but a gem in my music library.
