Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s-Skeleton Key

I first discovered this band in early 2007, and I absolutely love them. I heard this track on the radio, and it got me curious enough to go and buy their first album, “The Dust of Retreat” and woof! am I glad I did. The album is an actual album, rather than just a collection of songs, and that by itself is refreshing and rare these days. The fact that all the songs are really gorgeous and edgy pop music is icing on the cake.
It’s easy to see how the 7 piece “cinematic chamber pop” ensemble from Indianapolis easily could have fallen into the seductive trap of indie hipsterism, but they managed to avoid it and create really beautiful music together, and I thank them for it.
Check ‘em out now, before they get super-famous!

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros – Home

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros is an ensemble band led by Alex Ebert, vocalist of the power pop group Ima Robot. After breaking up with his girlfriend, moving out of his house, and joining Alcoholics Anonymous, Ebert began work on a story about a messianic figure named Edward Sharpe. According to Ebert, Sharpe “was sent down to Earth to kinda heal and save mankind…but he kept getting distracted by girls and falling in love.”

The band’s first full-length recording, Up from Below, was released on July 7, 2009. “Home” was voted number 15 on the Australian Triple J Hottest 100, 2009 countdown, the largest music poll in the world. Shout out to my sister, Neekole, for recommending this song.

Os Mutantes – Quem Tem Medo De Brincar De Amor

Ever wonder what the Beatles would sound like if they joined forces with Frank Zappa? …and spoke Portuguese? Check out this song by Os Mutantes from São Paulo, Brazil. They were part of the Tropicália movement in Brazil which arose in the late 1960’s.

Eddie Hazel – What About It?

Eddie Hazel was most famous for his incredible lead guitar playing in Parliament Funkadelic. In 1977, Hazel recorded Guitars, Dames, and Guitar Thangs with support from members of Parliament Funkadelic. “What About It?” is a great song off the album. While it doesn’t feature him ripping crazy solos, it has a really cool groove. Check out Maggot Brain if you want to see some ripping guitar solos.

Pink Floyd – See Emily Play

I’ve been getting back into Pink Floyd lately so here’s one of the lesser known Floyd songs. “See Emily Play” was written by Syd Barret and recorded on May 23, 1967. According to A Saucerful of Secrets: The Pink Floyd Odyssey, by Nicholas Schaffner, Emily is the Honorable Emily Young, daughter of Wayland Hilton Young, 2nd Baron Kennet, and nicknamed “the psychedelic schoolgirl” at the UFO Club.
