Happy Monday! This awesome cover of “Hey Jude”, originally by the Beatles, is the perfect song to start your week.

The Clash AKA “The Only Band That Matters,” released their self-titled debut album in 1977 (does anyone have the stat on how many debut albums are self-titled?). It was a hit around the UK as The Clash established themselves as a freedom fighter band in their native country.
This track, Police and Thieves (a regular recording room warm up song) was chosen over the Bob Marley’s Dancing Shoes to round out the album’s song list. The song was originally written and recorded by Junior Murvin and Lee “Scratch” Perry 1976 and appears on a variety of albums including: the classic 1980 soundtrack for the film THE ROCKERS (where I first discovered this song) and Lee Perry’s This Is Reggae Music, vol 3.
Murvin’s first comment regarding The Clash recording was: “They have destroyed Jah work!” I am sure he came around because the song jams. In the end however, I believe Murvin’s version is superior and is well worth exploring.
Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad ( @giantpandadub ) play an eclectic blend of roots reggae, dub, and afrobeat. Back in May I posted “Seasons Change” and I have to bring another one of their songs to my audience. I hope you enjoy “Missing You More”, an unknown song to most of the world but a gem in my music library.
I don’t think this tune is really underplayed but it’s a good one and I got a request for it. I think most people know who Matisyahu but then again, I don’t hear him often on the radio. He is an American Hasidic Jewish reggae musician. “One Day” is off of Matisyahu’s album Light which was released this past August.
Umoja is a band from Puerto Rico and that is about as much info as I can find on them. This song was recommended by a friend who had a digital copy of the tune. I haven’t been able to find this song or other tracks by Umoja anywhere on the web.
“Carry Go Bring Home” was a really popular song in Jamaica but chances are you haven’t heard it because American radio doesn’t play Jamaican ska.
Giant Panda is probably my favorite local bands right now. They put on a great live show so be sure to check them out if they come to your area. If you like Seasons Change, I encourage you to check out their MySpace page where they have been regularly updating their music player with the latest live music.
